This is a fantastic way to see all of the famed sites of Paris, but from a popular music history perspective! As we tour places like the Marais, Place Vendôme, the Bastille, the ‘Left Bank’, Montmartre and the Pigalle, the Seine embankment, and Père Lachaise Cemetery and Boulevard Saint Germain, you’ll not only hear about the French adventures of the Beatles, Stones, Hendrix, Clash, Pink Floyd, Sex Pistols and other rock bands, but also learn about seminal French musicians like Johnny Hallyday, Serge Gainsbourg, Francoise Hardy and Edith Piaf. You’ll also learn about the birth of Be-bop and ‘Hot Club’ jazz! Our day also follows in the footsteps of the great 'Doors' singer, Jim Morrison, exploring his life here and examining the mystery of his death and burial in Paris exactly 40-years ago. We meet at the regal George V hotel. Many bands have stayed here over the last five decades but perhaps its most famous claim to rock fame is that it was while staying here that the Beatles learned they’d achieved their first USA Number One! Then on to another sumptuous Paris hotel with Rock connections; the Ritz in the beautiful Place Vendôme. Nearby is the Olympia Concert Hall (the Beatles only played the Cavern and the Star Club in Hamburg more often). This has hosted legion of bands and your guide will enthrall you with stories of Hendrix, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and French rockers like Johnny Hallyday. Nearby we have the Paris Hard Rock Café and site of the original Paris 1950s rock club known to Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochrane. Then, after visiting the night-life district of the Pigalle, we visit Jim Morrison’s grave in Père Lachaise, and have time to see others like Edith Piaf, who lie buried in this incredible place. We keep to the Morrison theme with a visit to the Place des Vosges and Jim’s flat in the Marais. Then crossing the Seine river, we spend time exploring the ‘Latin Quarter’, home of the Sorbonne university and long the hang-out of the Parisian bohemians and intellectuals in cafes like Les Deux Magot on the Boulevard St-Germain, jazz clubs and boutique hotels used by the stars. Paris tour commemorating the death of Jim Morrison
Choose from Sat, July 02 or Sun, July 03 Start/End of tour to be advised Adult £45/Child £30 (12 and under) Our commemorative tour explores in depth the life and times of Jim Morrison in Paris. We'll begin our day's touring where Jim first encountered Paris, while staying at the same hotel where Oscar Wilde, another tortured genius, died. We spend time this morning exploring part of the ‘Latin Quarter’; home of the Sorbonne university and long the hang-out of the Parisian bohemians and intellectuals, the quarter boasts cafes like Les Deux Magot, jazz clubs and boutique hotels used by the stars. Though 40-years since Jim 'found' Paris any changes have not made the quarter any the less intriguing, and we'll see why the area was, and is, so popular amongst musicians and other artists. Jim soon found a flat to rent in the fashionable Marais district. We follow his footsteps acrossing the Seine and spend time walking these atmosphere-filled streets. The small cafes, bars and interesting architecture of the Marais easily explain why this was such a fine place to live. One of Paris's main iconic locations, the Place de Vosges is in this dstrict and it was here that Morrison would come to sit, reflect and write his poetry under the shade of the trees, or while seated in a small bistro. Jim's nearby flat is where he was purported to have died, but we'll discover the real location later in our day. Alas, our next location is the incredible Pere Lachaise cemetery. Our main reason for coming here is of course to see Morrison's grave and to pay our respects. The amazing gothic tombs and family vaults of this incredible, sprawling, silent centre of Paris demand we spend more time here. You'll have independent time to search out the last resting places of international artists, philosophers, politicans and the unsung population of the city. Here you'll find the graves of musicians like Stephane Grapelli, singing stars like Edith Piaf, writers such as Oscar Wilde, Gertude Stein, Colette and Balzac, actors like Sarah Bernhardt and Yves Montand, and dancer Isadora Duncan. We finally return to to the Latin Quarter; to places beloved both by Morrison and a complement of other rock musicians. Off the Boulevard St Germain, we'll visit and have unique special access to the club where Morrison died, and learn how and why his already dead corpse was spirited away to his flat. During our day we'll also visit a number of other sites connected with the Morrison story, and will also take advantage of attending other commemorative Morrison events and exhibitions as convenient to our main schedule.
